Ethan and I were approached by Sunwarrior to see if we would be interested in trying Sunwarrior Protein Powder. While we don’t often use protein powders, they can be a good supplement when we know we will have a long gap between meals, like during a road trip, and want to make sure we have a good store of protein and essential nutrients to keep us going until we can eat a meal. One scoop of Sunwarrior protein powder contains 18 grams of protein, about one-third of our daily requirements.  The average adult over 19 years old requires about .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (or .37 grams per pound). For men, this comes out to about 57 grams of protein and for women about 46 grams. For women who are pregnant or nursing, this requirement is higher. Eating a well balanced vegan diet will ensure you get enough protein in your diet (psst, all plants contain protein).

We decided to try the Sunwarrior Classic Plus vanilla protein. I added it to my regular morning smoothie and Ethan added it to his date shake. I found that the powder left a bitter taste in my mouth, that Ethan did not experience. It might be because my smoothie is orange juice based whereas Ethan’s shake is soy milk based. However, we both found that even after a blending in the vita-mix, the powder was noticeably gritty in both of our drinks. From a taste perspective, mixing this powder with a non-dairy milk is the way to go. From a texture perspective, you are going to have to deal with some grittiness. If you use protein powders, you are likely used to the odd texture they give to drinks, and won’t mind it. Perhaps in a thicker beverage, it would not be as noticeable.

Of all the vegan protein powders I have tried, Sunwarrior is the only one that didn’t make me think I was drinking dirt. Also, all the other protein powders I have tried turned my smoothie a greenish-brown color, Sun Warrior  did not do that, so I was very pleased. If I were going to make regular use of a protein powder, Sunwarrior would be high on my list of ones to use.
