We first found the mouth-watering photos of the amazing vegan creations by Heirloom Vegan Eatery on their Instagram page back in the summer.  In September, we were seriously thinking about moving to Williamsburg and we decided to check out their location which, their Facebook page listed as being in South Williamsburg, just by the bridge. We met our friend Danielle there for lunch only to sadly learn that they were no longer in that space. Instead, they were doing pop-ups and the vegan shop-up in Brooklyn.  As fate would have it, each time they were having one, we were otherwise committed or out of town. Fast forward to this weekend when they announced a last-minute Sunday pop-up at Shwick Market, right here in Brooklyn. Finally– our time had come!

Their brunch is only $12 for a very full plate of stick-to-your ribs vegan comfort food:

From the top left, clockwise: Fried Chick'n and Waffles, Biscuits and Gravy, Beans, mace & cheese, and Tater Tots.

Though I’m not a huge fan of Beyond Meat’s Beyond Chicken Grilled Strips, these were prepared perfectly and I really did enjoy them. The waffles were the perfect pairing. I mean, who doesn’t like fried chick’n and waffles?!? The biscuits were crisp and golden on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The creamy herbed gravy, filled with generous lumps of vegan sausage, paired beautifully with biscuits.  The baked beans were some of the best I’ve ever had and their mac & cheese was also one of the best vegan macs I’ve had to date. Oh– and there were tater tots. TATER TOTS!!!! Ah… I love tater tots…  This was simply delicious.

Heirloom Vegan Eatery is really hoping to have a more regular pop-up and a better location and I for one really would love to see that happen. Their food is delicious and if you check out their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages, you’ll see what else they can do. This is the kind of vegan food that we in the NYC vegan community should be supporting. As I see it, their only challenge is that they need a more permanent home. I hope that they find it somewhere other than the Shwick market as that is not in a convenient location for public transport (especially for those coming from outside Brooklyn). I totally understand that this is what they can afford to do right now, but at Shwick, there is no seating aside from one bench that can fit 2 or 3 at a time. Not cool for most of us who would like to sit down when we eat. Maybe they need a kickstarter?? Hmm…. there’s an idea.

In the meanwhile, follow them and get yourself to their next event. And when you go there and love their food, let ’em know that The ‘Mos sent ya!
