My mother and I were speaking last month and she was reminiscing about the time when I was a young teenager and she discovered that I loved Brussels sprouts. I had come home from school and wanted a snack. My mom was out working with a client so it was up to me to figure that out. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve preferred snacking on fruits and veggies- it’s just how I’m wired. I mean, don’t get me wrong: I love chocolate, candy, and chips, but fruit and veggies have always been my go-to.  Anyway,  I took out a package of frozen Brussels sprouts, placed this frozen brick of plant matter in a pot and boiled it until it was done. I drained out the water, added a bit of salt and pepper and started snacking, when my mom came home and exclaimed, “What is that smell???” Apparently, mom wasn’t a fan of Brussels sprouts.

Fast forward to now, over 30 years later, and my mom has come around. She actually likes them, “If they’re done right” which she insists that she doesn’t. I explained to her that the simple trick is to roast them, and not boil them. By our third conversation in about 2 weeks on the subject, I realized that if I was going to get my mom to eat these, I was going to need to take action. So I made a super primitive/roughly cut video and sent it to her.

Michael thought this was cute and that I needed to share this, so– here you go. The simplest way to roast Brussels sprouts.

And, yes, mom loved how they came out. You will, too.
